Better Design Through Embodied Carbon

Date: January 13, 2021
Time: Noon – 1:00 pm CST
Presenter: Emily Lorenz, PE
Credits: 1 PDH and/or 1 AIA CES LU/HSW (AIA Course #MCC011321)

Registration Link: https://cvent.me/mqYLqX

Description: Now that architects have a good understanding of environmental impacts related to energy use, the next design frontier in tackling climate change is reducing the embodied carbon in buildings. This live webinar will focus on best practices for determining the embodied carbon in a building, including credible sources for embodied carbon data. It will introduce common practices and misconceptions about comparisons of embodied carbon. A case study will be presented that highlights how design decisions may be influenced when comparing among up-front carbon, use-phase carbon, or whole-life carbon. The presentation will highlight existing tools related to quantifying embodied carbon.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to identify credible sources for embodied carbon data.
  2. Participants will learn instances when the embodied carbon of systems should not be compared.
  3. Participants will understand pitfalls related to short-cuts or estimates of embodied carbon.
  4. Participants will learn how to determine the embodied carbon in their buildings.

Speaker Bio: Emily Lorenz, PE, is an independent consultant in the areas of LCA, EPDs, PCRs, green building, and sustainability. She serves as an engineer in the areas of green structures and practices, energy efficiency, thermal properties, and moisture mitigation. Lorenz also specializes in green building code and standard work and advocacy.

AIA credits for these live webinars are being processed by the Minnesota Concrete Council – AIA Provider G538.  Attendees will receive a certificate of attendance from the Minnesota Concrete Council for one professional development hour (PDH) within ten business days of the conclusion of the event.

About the Sustainable Structures Webinar Series

The Sustainable Structures Webinar Series was developed cooperatively by cast-in-place and precast concrete associations from the Midwest region of the United States including Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.  The goal of the cooperative effort is to bring a greater awareness of the sustainable and resilient nature of concrete building systems to the design, construction, and development communities via quality continuing education programs.
