Construction of the Hoover Dam

Luke Snell – Emeritus Professor, School of Engineering,
Chair of ACI History Committee and Executive Director, Missouri ACI

The construction of the Hoover Dam was one of the most challenging construction
projects in the world during the 1930s. The extreme temperatures, difficult soil
conditions, lack of access to the construction site and construction in poor economic
time were the major challenges. Many new techniques of concrete constructions that we
use today were developed or improved during it construction. It construction tamed a
river, provided irrigation and electricity to the southwest USA and created an economic
boom for the area.

Although the constructions was over 80 years ago, the Hoover Dam is one of the most
popular tourist’s sites in the USA., Come and see how the engineers and management
faced and met these challenges to build a beautiful structure that fascinates us today!
